ABSTRACT

Thirty thousand children a year die from preventable injuries, including serious cuts and burns, drowning, road traffic accidents and falls. The Prevention of Child Injury through Social-intervention and Education (PRECISE) is the largest child injury intervention programme ever initiated in a developing country. The goal of the project is the reduce child and parental mortalities, morbidities and disabilities due to injury by implementing comprehensive prevention programmes that can be reproduced in a cost effective manner.  PRECISE is currently implemented in three rural areas, with an additional one urban control area covering a total population of 800,000. This population is monitored using CIPRB’s unique Injury Surveillance System which records changes in injury patterns. This is a critical monitoring tool of the project.

The programme’s main components include:

  • Survival swimming lessons for children
  • Crèches to provide a safe, nurturing environment for children (the crèches are run during the hours of the day when most accidents occur)
  • A Home Safety Programme to create safe homes by removing physical hazards
  • A School Safety Programme to educate school children about injury prevention
